Benjamin Willard (1743-1803), Lexington, Massachusetts, 1768
12-inch composite brass, roman numeral dial engraved “Benj(a) Willard/Lexington” and inscribed on the back of the chapter ring “Sept. 23, 1768”, seconds’ bit inset within a scalloped surround, recessed day-of-the-month and engraved Phoenix bird on the boss in the arch, matted center, cast brass spandrels decorate the voids, blued steel hands.
Walnut “Pagoda” or “Hollowed-Pediment” top case with three brass finials, free-standing columns flanking the dial door, serpentine-shaped top to the waist door, all on a two-stage base molding.
Eight-day, brass movement with rack and snail strike and recoil escapement powered by two bog iron weights and regulated by a brass faced, lead backed pendulum bob and iron rod.
