Aaron Willard Jr. name stamp, Boston, before 1850
1802.76 Willard House and Clock Museum
Aaron Willard Jr. (1783-1864) was most productive in 1830s, retiring from Clockmaking in 1850s, so the name punch is probably dated before that. Name stamps similar to this were usually hand forged out of steel, brass and bronze and used for decades as a maker’s mark by carpenters and woodworkers, however, often they were imprinting stamps for personal instruments and belongings, not identifiers for final products. We could assume this stamp had been used in Aaron Willard Jr’s workshop to mark equipment and tools.
Willard maker's mark tool/stamp also known as carpenter's name punch: two lines of text in capital block letters without border:
A.WILLARD Jr.
