Simon Willard at age 89, Boston, c. 1844
Albumen silver print from a glass negative of Simon Willard at age 89, done at 333 Washington Street, Boston around 1844 by J. W. Black & Co. photographic artists, who were well-known as the studio that captured the oldest surviving aerial photo of Boston in 1860. It was taken by photographer James Wallace Black from a hot air balloon 2,000 feet in the air.
Simon is shown as an older gentleman with unruly grey hair, dressed in a dark-colored coat, a buttoned-up vest and a white collared shirt or cravat. He is wearing glasses and holding a walking stick in his left hand.
This is one of two identical photographs in the collection. This one is framed in a golden wooden frame with an oval cutout on a white mat. Original photo size is 2.5" x 4" rectangular.
