Simon Willard (1753-1848) Lighthouse Clock, Massachusetts, ca. 1824
This rare Lighthouse clock was made for George Tilly Rice, a descendant of the first permanent settler of Worcester, MA, Jonas Rice, and is stenciled “Patent for Mr. G. T. Rice, Worcester, A.D. 1824”. The single-family Provenance traces the clock from the last owner back to G. T. Rice to whom the clock was presented by Simon Willard himself.
Round porcelain dial marked “Simon Willard” with roman numbers, black cut steel hands; mounted on fitted steel plate; round gold topper decorated with oak leaf motive, same as feet.
Domed brass plate over top movement with gilt brass finial with original blown Sandwich glass dome with ruffled base ball finial.
Eight-day day running length with eight-day weight movement; retains original painted surface with leaf design on tapered column and gilded molding stenciled front center.
Square base with breadboard end door with stenciled floral and leaf swag, simple brass T-door handle ending on gilded brass ball feet with leaf overlay in front and stenciled wood ball feet on back.
