Simon Willard (1783-1848), Massachusetts, 1793, "Bancroft"
12 1/8”painted iron dial with Roman numerals, Arabic minute numerals and seconds bit. Separate calendar and moon phase discs. Floral corner decorations with gold relief. Name "SIMON WILLARD" in block lettering over numeral six. Dial is signed on reverse by the artist "J. Minot No. 221". Pierced steel hands.
Mahogany Roxbury style case with brass ball and spire finials. Free standing fluted hood columns with brass stops and capitals. Quarter columns at the rear. Waist has arch top door with applied molding and fluted quarter columns with brass stops and capitals. Double step molded base with ogee feet. Light and dark oval inlay and string inlay on base panel.
Eight day movement with brass plates and wheels, steel pinions and a recoil escapement. Seconds pendulum with an iron rod and a brass faced lead bob. Grooved winding drums and a rack-and-snail mechanism. Separate wheel mounted on a bridge over the seconds bit arbor to operate the moon dial. Filled tin can weights.
Retains the original bill of sale.
