Simon Willard (1783-1848), Roxbury, Massachusetts, c. 1810
Painted iron dial with Roman numerals, open minute track with red five minute marks, gold leaf band on the outer edge; dial attached to case by two "L" shaped turns with two guide pins; open loop barbed steel hands.
This mahogany timepiece is constructed with a one piece mahogany backboard; a gilded pine eagle by John Doggett.
The cast brass bezel has a 1.5" hinge and the glass is retained by two clips; the brass side rails are pinned through the tail, diamond and the ball at the top as in the early models.
The geometric design glass tablets are painted with black, soft powder blue, white and gold leaf; the acorn and leaf design is in the throat glass; the large semi-circular pendulum opening in the box glass originally had sun rays in gold leaf; the name "S. Willard's Patent" in gold and backed in black is in a single line below the pendulum opening.
Eight-day timepiece with brass plates and wheels, steel pinions, dead beat escapement with a T-bridge suspension; brass faced lead pendulum bob with an iron rod, lead weight.
