Landscape "Cliffs of Newport", attrib. Martha Willard, 19th c.
This lovely 12” H by 18” W seascape depicts a lonely boat drifting away from the shore of Newport, Rhode Island. The silhouettes of several other sails are visible on the horizon. The right fore and mid-ground are dominated by monumental dark cliffs. Large-cloudy sky in background creates an impression of a movement on a windy day, which is supported by the direction of the waves and slightly angled posture of the two tiny figures climbing up the rocks, leaning against the gusts of wind, in the right-side corner of the painting. Could it be one of the first representations of the famous Newport Cliff Walk?
The oil on stretched canvas painting is attributed to the artist Martha Willard. It is framed in a gilt over gesso frame.
