Simon Willard (1783-1848), Roxbury, Massachusetts, c. 1825
Painted iron dial, Roman numerals, closed minute track with inside circle, seconds bit under numeral twelve, signed "S. WILLARD" under center in block lettering; diamond style steel hands with a touch mark on minute hand square, but no corresponding mark on the minute wheel.
This mahogany cased timepiece has a one-piece pine backboard, the bezel is cast brass with a hinge and a spring style catch, the glass is retained by three brass clips.
The side rails are carved mahogany, the frames are mahogany with half round cross banded faces; the frame joints are mitered, the throat has a single spline and the box frame has double splines.The throat frame is attached with two brass tabs on the lower corners and a wood extension fitting under the dial, the box frame is attached by two brass butt hinges and locked by a spring catch.
Eight-day timepiece with brass plates and wheels, steel pinions with a T-bridge and dead beat escapement; maintaining power on great wheel and the movement is attached to the case by two fillister head screws; brass faced lead pendulum bob with wood rod; lead weight.
