Aaron Willard Jr. (1783-1864), Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1820
Painted iron dial with Roman numerals, single line minute track with slash minute marks and dots at the five minute marks; inside circle; signed "A. Willard Jr." over center and "Boston" under center in script; dial attached to case by three "L" shaped turns; barbed style steel hands.
This mahogany cased timepiece has a one piece chestnut backboard; it also has chamfered pine glue blocks. The bezel and side rails are cast brass with a 1 5/8" bezel hinge and the bezel glass is retained by three clips; the side rails are close to the case sides and pinned through the inside rail.
The chestnut frames and rope twist are gilded separately, the rope being applied after gilding; the throat frame is recessed into the case and is attached by two screws through brass extensions at the lower end and a wood extension on the top under the dial; the box frame has two butt hinges and an "L' shaped latch that is turned by the winding key.
The decorated glass tablets have matching white background; in the throat there are two shields backed in red, one with an eagle and the other with the word "Patent"; the box glass is a scene of "Mount Vernon" before its restoration.
Eight-day timepiece with brass plates and wheels, steel pinions and a recoil escapement; brass faced lead pendulum bob with an iron rod, lead weight.
