Simon Willard (1783-1848), Roxbury, Massachusetts, c. 1810
Painted iron dial with Roman numerals, Arabic minute figures at 15-30-45-60; gold leaf band on outer edge, open minute track with painted stars on the fifteen-minute marks, dial attached to case with two "L" shaped turns and two guide pins; barbed style steel hands.
The ball and eagle finial, bezel and side rails are all cast brass; the bezel has a large hinge and the glass is retained by two clips; the side rails are pinned through the tail, center diamond and ball at the top.
The geometric glass tablets are done in blue, beige, and white with gold leaf; the throat glass is the acorn pattern; the name "S. WILLARD'S PATENT" in block lettering in the box tablet is surrounded by a beautiful scroll design.
Eight-day timepiece with brass plates and wheels, steel pinions with a recoil escapement, T-bridge suspicion; movement attached to the case by two fillister head screws, brass faced lead pendulum bob with iron rod, lead weight.
