Aaron Willard Jr. (1783-1864), Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1820
Painted iron dial with Roman numerals, closed minute track with dots at the five minute marks; dial attached to the case by three "L" shaped turns; barbed style steel hands with touch mark.
Mahogany cased timepiece has a one-piece backboard; mitered corners with spline glue block construction holding in the bottom; the blocking is 3/4" chamfered pine and mahogany; the bezel and side rails are cast brass; the bezel has a 1 5/16" hinge and the glass is retained by three clips; the side rails are pinned through the inside rail.
The chestnut frames have been regilded without removing the rope twist; this changes the appearance of the clock; the throat frame is recessed into the case and is attached by two screws through brass extensions at the lower end and a wood extension at the top under the dial; the box frame has two cast butt hinges and an "L" shaped latch with brass knob.
The decorated glass tablets have a simple gold band with stencilled borders and a matching green background; the upper portion of the throat tablet is also stencilled and the lower part depicts a gold design with the name "A. Willard Jr. Boston"; the box tablet is a view of the "Constitution's Escape"; the ships are listed accross the bottom of the glass, "Belvedere, Gurriere (misspelled), Aeolus, Shannon, Constitution, Africa."
Eight-day timepiece with brass plates and wheels, steel pinions with a recoil escapement; t-bridge suspension; movement attached to the case by two long fillister head screws (missing); brass faced lead pendulum bob with iron rod.
