Simon Willard (1783-1848), Massachusetts, Shelf Clock, c. 1769
Engraved brass dial with Roman numerals and Arabic minute numerals; name "WILLARD" engraved in block lettering over center and "Grafton" in script lettering under center; beetle style hands.
Cherry cased timepiece with a simple shaped molding both top and bottom, the front is a single door of mortise and tenon construction with a molded edge opening in the top section for the glass and the lower section contains a wood panel; the brass cast bezel is 1.13" deep and the movement sets completely within the bezel making it possible to attach both movement and the bezel to the case with the same screws; note scrap metal in lead weight.
Thirty-hour movement with drop off strike; brass plates and solid brass wheels (not spoked). Steel pinions, dead beat escapement, pendulum suspended in a fixed position on the pallet arbor.
The circular plates have extended arms to accommodate the three movement pillars and the winding and pallet arbors; the back plate arms extend a little further for attaching movement to the backboard; winding arbor at numeral two; lead pendulum bob.
