Aaron Willard (1757-1844), Massachusetts, Shelf Clock, c. 1825
Shelf Clock by Aaron Willard, also known as Bride’s clock or Dish dial shelf clock.
Painted iron dial with 7/8" Roman numerals, single line minute track with dots at the five minute marks; inside circle; attached to movement with three brass feet; crossed spear style steel hands.
Mahogany timepiece with gilded wood acorn finial, flanked by two small mahogany acorn finials; the case is painted white except the base molding and the finial pediment which are painted black and stencilled; gold leaf frames with applied rope decoration; the upper tablet has gilt anchor and stencil decoration around the dial and the name "Aaron Willard/BOSTON" in the lower section; the lower glass tablet depicts a country scene of Mary and lamb enclosed by wide stencilled border; the case stands on two cast brass claw feet and one turned foot, split, forming the two back feet.
Eight-day timepiece with cast brass plates and wheels, steel pinions and a recoil escapement; brass faced lead pendulum bob with an iron rod; iron weight has a cast V groove around center to accommodate a bent wire form of pulley hook; winds at 2:15 position.
