Simon Willard (1753-1848) Lighthouse Clock, Massachusetts, c. 1820
Another example of a rare Lighthouse Clock, or Patent Alarm Timepiece, by Simon Willard.
Painted iron dial with Roman numerals and open minute track; one inch porcelain alarm disc on center arbor for setting alarm; name "SIMON / WILLARD" in block lettering; moon type steel hands, alarm pointer on opposite end of hour hand.
An unadorned mahogany case with nicely turned moldings and surmounted with a clear glass globe (replacement); the upper and lower portions of the case are circular; it has a nicely finished movement; the case stands on three brass ball feet; the flattened alarm bell is mounted above the movement and held in place with a brass ball finial.
Eight-day timepiece with alarm mechanism, brass plates and wheels, steel pinions; the movement has dead beat escapement and T-bridge suspension; pendulum has beat regulator on suspension; pull cord alarm mechanism on left side and is a "run away" style alarm; to set alarm, turn porcelain disc, placing the hour you wish to rise under the pointer at the opposite end of the hour hand.
