Benjamin Willard (1743-1803), Grafton, Massachusetts, c. 1775
11 1/2” brass engraved dial with applied chapter ring, seconds bit. Phoenix bird on the boss in arch, separate calendar ring. Name "Benj'a Willard/Grafton" in script lettering on seconds bit. Applied dolphin and cherub spandrels. Pierced steel hands.
Birch and maple case with broken arch hood, urn and flame wood finial, free standing hood columns with brass capitals, a wide arch top waist door with a molded edge and a plain base panel with straight bracket feet. Case ornately carved at a later date. Finial replaced. It is believed this may be a David Young case, contemporary with when the four brothers were working, that was carved during the Victorian era. The clock and case were probably a later marriage since Willard and Young never were known to work together.
Eight-day movement with brass plates and wheels, steel pinions. Rack and snail striking mechanism, grooved winding drums. Wood pendulum rod with brass faced lead bob. Bog iron weights.
