Simon Willard (1783-1848), Roxbury, c. 1792, Musical Clock
13 1/8” painted iron dial with Roman numerals, Arabic minute numerals and seconds bit. Strike-silent ring and a song title ring. Separate calendar disc. Floral corner and arch decorations with gold relief. Dial signed "Simon Willard" in script over numeral six and signed on the reverse side by the dial painter "J. Minott No. 152". Pierced steel hands.
Mahogany Roxbury style case with brass ball and spire finials, pierced and blind fretwork. Free standing fluted hood columns with brass stops and capitals. Quarter columns at the rear. Brass bead around dial matte. Side light windows in hood are blind fret instead of glass to let the sound of the bells out while playing tunes. Waist has a rectangular door with applied molding. The waist door and the double step molded base contain the same mahogany cross banding and fan inlay. Ogee bracket feet.
Eight-day movement with extra heavy brass plates, brass wheels, steel pinions and levers and a recoil escapement. Seconds pendulum with an iron rod and a brass faced lead bob. Grooved winding drums and rack-and-snail striking on a separate bell.
A brass cast bridge extends through the back plate to support the musical barrel, a string of ten bells, and a double bladed fan, (to govern tempo).
The music barrel carries seven tunes and is indexed by the hand on the front of the dial. Filled tin can weights. Base was once removed to apply supports on base panel.
