Simon Willard & Son, Roxbury, Massachusetts, No. 4472, ca. 1825
Painted iron dial 7 11/16” with Roman numerals, closed minute track, inside circle. Signed "Simon Willard & Son/No. 4472" in script lettering; dial attached to case by two "L" shaped turns and two guide pins. Barbed-style steel hands.
Mahogany case with a one piece pine backboard with mitered corner construction. Triangular pine glue blocks in the four corners and chamfered blocks elsewhere. The bezel is cast brass and the bezel glass is retained by three clips. The mahogany frames with the narrow cross banded half round molding still retain the grace of the early timepieces. The corners are mitered with a spline construction, the throat frame is attached by a wood extension under the dial at the top and a wood extension at the bottom with two screws. The box frame has two 13/16" brass butt hinges and a wire hook and staple door catch. The finial is turned mahogany. The glass panels are painted like mahogany graining.
Eight-day timepiece with cast-brass plates and wheels, steel pinions with a recoil escapement. Movement attached to case by two long fillister head screws. Brass-faced lead pendulum bob with iron rod. Lead weight.
